Simpler Recycling 2025 | What Changed for Businesses?
Simpler Recycling 2025: What Changed for Businesses?
Simpler Recycling 2025 introduced important changes to workplace recycling across England. From 31 March 2025, businesses and other workplaces were required to separate key recyclable materials, food waste and non-recyclable waste before collection.
The changes were introduced to create a more consistent approach to recycling, make waste separation easier to understand and help increase recycling rates across England.
If you are looking for a general introduction to the scheme, read our What is Simpler Recycling? guide.
What Happened on 31 March 2025?
On 31 March 2025, the new workplace Simpler Recycling rules came into force in England.
Businesses, charities and public sector organisations covered by the requirements became responsible for separating recyclable materials from food waste and non-recyclable waste before collection.
This means workplaces must separate:
- Dry recyclable materials – plastic, metal, glass, paper and card
- Food waste
- Non-recyclable waste – also known as residual waste
The rules also cover waste generated by employees, customers and visitors.
Why Did Recycling Change in 2025?
One of the aims of Simpler Recycling is to create greater consistency in how waste is recycled across England.
Previously, recycling arrangements could vary considerably between different locations. The changes are intended to make it clearer which materials should be recycled and help ensure valuable recyclable materials are separated from general waste.
For workplaces, this means reviewing how waste is collected internally and ensuring suitable arrangements are in place before it is collected by a waste contractor.
Who Did Simpler Recycling 2025 Apply To?
The March 2025 requirements apply broadly to workplaces in England, including businesses, charities and public sector organisations.
This includes workplaces such as offices, shops, warehouses, schools, healthcare settings, hospitality businesses and other commercial premises.
Businesses should consider waste generated throughout their premises, including customer-facing and visitor areas where bins are provided.

What Recycling Bins Were Needed for 2025?
The introduction of Simpler Recycling meant many businesses needed to review their existing workplace bins and recycling stations.
There is not one specific type of bin that every business must purchase. Instead, businesses need a system that allows the required waste streams to be appropriately separated before collection.
This could include individual recycling bins, modular recycling stations or multi-stream units with clearly labelled sections for different types of waste.
Clear signage and colour coding can also help employees, customers and visitors identify the correct waste stream and reduce recycling contamination.
